MacDonald Portal Hotel Golf & Spa

A customer from Stockport who stayed at this hotel wrote this review.

Hotel was in a lovely location but staff didn't have a double room for us as we'd booked the night previously through Superbreaks. Eventually found us a room and gave us a complementary bottle of wine. We had a look at the restaurant menu and as I am a vegetarian there was no nice option so we opted for a local pub meal. Breakfast the next day was a fiasco, it took 20 mins to get a drink, a lot of the buffet food was running out and it was generally not well organised. The quality of the scrambled eggs made me glad that we'd not eaten in the Restaurant the night before.

Hotel Spa

A customer from West Glamorgan who stayed at this hotel wrote this review.

Great pool - good size & warm. Sauna & steam room also better than most. Hotel in a quiet location but good access to major roads. Local town of interest.

A Restful Time Out

A customer from Wallasey who stayed at this hotel wrote this review.

We had a very peaceful time at the portal in Tarpoley. But the pool was full of young children at 4:00pm so we could not swim there was no evidance of a notice about child times in the pool.

Great break in Cheshire

A customer who stayed at this hotel wrote this review.

We stayed at the McDonald Portal Golf and Spa Hotel for 3 nights. It was by far one of the best hotels we have stayed in! Leisure facilities were fab and staff were so helpful. Breakfasts were excellent. The hotel is in a beautiful location on the outskirts of Tarporley a beautiful village about 10 miles out of Chester. It is ideal for visiting Chester shops, zoo and only an hours drive into Wales. The rooms were huge and extremely clean. The hotel is only 2 years old and the spa is really good and prices are reasonable. The pool is extremely good for the children as the depth is 1.2m the whole length. Our children (aged 8 and 9) also enjoyed the showers around the pool as they had drench, cold and fragrance. The ice room/steam rooms/saunas were all very clean and not busy. We did not eat at the hotel but tried local pubs in the area, the best one we found at Beeston on the main road oppoisite the railway line (think it was called The Castle). Good choice of menu and prices good (especially for families and they have senior citizen menus too). We went to Chester Zoo which we all really enjoyed and took a picnic to the local locks to watch the narrow boats. We also had a day on the beach in Llandudno. All in all an excellent break and we will definitely return.
